Pinterest Introduces AI Content Filters Following User Backlash

Pinterest unveiled new content filtering tools on Thursday, giving users the ability to dial down AI-generated images in their feeds after months of mounting frustration over synthetic content flooding the platform.

What the New Controls Offer

The visual search platform’s “GenAI interests” controls, accessible through account settings, let users reduce AI-created pins across multiple categories: beauty, art, fashion, home décor, architecture, entertainment, health, and sports. Android and desktop users get access first, with iOS support rolling out “in the coming weeks.”

User Frustration Reaches Breaking Point

This move comes after an unprecedented wave of Pinterest user rebellion against what critics have dubbed “AI slop” – low-quality synthetic content that’s clogging feeds and making it harder to find genuine inspiration. According to Pinterest’s own data, generative AI now accounts for 57% of all online content.

Complaints have exploded across social media platforms. “AI is ruining Pinterest. I’m close to deleting the app!” one Reddit user posted. Apple Store reviews echo similar frustration, with one reviewer stating that AI pins “are cluttering Pinterest and making it impossible to find real stories that happened, real images that people photographed.”

The backlash gained momentum through viral social media posts, including a celebratory tweet from illustrator hansoeii that racked up over 6 million views and nearly half a million likes within 24 hours of Pinterest’s announcement.

How Pinterest Is Responding

Matt Madrigal, Pinterest’s Chief Technology Officer, said the new controls aim to strike “the right balance between human creativity and AI innovation, while ensuring each feed truly reflects what inspires them most.” The company plans to expand available categories based on user feedback.

Pinterest acknowledges these controls won’t eliminate AI-generated content entirely – they’ll simply reduce it within selected categories. The platform continues relying on AI detection systems and recently enhanced its “AI-altered” labels to make them more prominent for users. However, some users report the filtering system remains imperfect, with AI-created content still appearing despite activating all available controls.
