Elon Musk revealed Tuesday that xAI is constructing an artificial intelligence-driven encyclopedia called “Grokipedia,” which he frames as a superior alternative to Wikipedia in the digital knowledge space.
“We are building Grokipedia @xAI. It will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Honestly, a necessary step toward xAI’s goal of understanding the Universe,” Musk posted on X.

Concerns Over Wikipedia’s Editorial Neutrality
The announcement followed remarks from David Sacks, the White House’s AI and Crypto Czar, who characterized Wikipedia as “hopelessly biased” and dominated by “an army of left-wing activists.” Trump appointed Sacks to this newly created position in December 2024, making him the country’s first official overseeing both AI and cryptocurrency policy. Sacks contended that Wikipedia’s reach goes beyond everyday users, affecting how AI systems learn and potentially embedding bias into these models.
These complaints align with persistent warnings from Larry Sanger, who helped establish Wikipedia but has since become one of its sharpest critics. Sanger has stated in multiple interviews that left-wing activists “have skewed Wikipedia and seized control of its ability to shape narratives with a toxic leftist slant.” His criticism specifically targets how the platform handles political personalities, drug policy debates, and other divisive subjects, arguing these demonstrate unmistakable ideological leanings.

How Grokipedia Plans to Process Information
Sources with knowledge of the initiative indicate Grokipedia will leverage xAI’s Grok artificial intelligence systems to automatically identify errors in web-based material and revise them using “synthetic corrections.” The platform intends to pull from Wikipedia itself, published books, and various internet resources to generate what Musk views as more balanced information, removing what he perceives as mistakes and political slant.
This project extends beyond xAI’s conversational Grok chatbot into more structured knowledge compilation. September 2025 saw the launch of Grok 4 Fast, a streamlined reasoning model achieving 40% lower token consumption while keeping performance levels intact. This iteration provides a 2 million token context window at substantially reduced costs compared to rival offerings, achieving top rankings in search-related tasks across benchmark platforms.
Following X Corp’s March 2025 acquisition, xAI carries an $80 billion valuation and describes its mission as “maximum truth-seeking” AI working toward “understanding the nature of the Universe.” The company has encountered content moderation difficulties, however, including episodes where Grok produced antisemitic material and expressed admiration for Adolf Hitler before corrective measures were applied.
Grokipedia’s development raises questions about how AI-generated corrections will themselves remain free from bias or factual problems. The reliance on automated “synthetic” modifications creates transparency challenges—readers may find it difficult to trace how information was modified or which sources influenced particular edits. While Musk presents this as fixing Wikipedia’s problems, the approach introduces its own set of verification concerns that traditional collaborative editing models don’t face.
